In the Bahamas, for nurses Basic Life Support is largely an employer and hospital expectation, while for patient-care roles a valid CPR certificate is a condition of the job. Here is what the rules and workplaces expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.
Health professionals: continuing education and up-to-date skills
Nurses in the Bahamas are registered and regulated by the Nursing Council of the Bahamas, which is responsible for professional standards and fitness to practise. Nurses are expected to keep their clinical skills current and to be able to respond to an emergency, and hospital employers commonly require Basic Life Support as a condition of the post. No publicly confirmed Council rule was found tying licence renewal to a fixed number of continuing-education hours.
In practice, the professional duty to maintain competence and the requirements set by hospitals and employers are what drive ongoing training in emergency care. Keeping a recognized, in-date credential is the reliable way to evidence that your skills meet the standard your workplace and your profession expect.
There is no country-wide mandatory continuing-education hours standard confirmed for these professions; keeping skills current is expected and largely employer-driven, and Basic Life Support is a common hospital requirement. A CPR/BLS course taken through an accredited or recognized provider can count toward that expectation, but no fixed hours should be assumed.
The requirement is met by any recognized continuing-education activity on an eligible topic. CPR/AED, ACLS (advanced cardiovascular life support) and PALS are among the eligible activities; other topics also qualify (for example safe prescribing, suicide prevention or violence prevention). A single course therefore both meets the obligation and counts toward your hours — provided you keep the proof.
How training becomes recognized
Not all activities are equal. For continuing education to be recognized by a professional order, it must meet specific criteria:
- the instructor’s competence;
- the relevance and quality of the content;
- the training framework;
- the quality of the material provided;
- mechanisms to monitor and assess participation.

Patient-care roles carry a specific requirement. A Patient Care Technician is expected to hold a valid CPR/AED certificate in addition to occupational training, and the Bahamas Health Professional Council governs the practice of these roles. A recognized standalone CPR/AED or first-aid certificate meets that requirement — a credential distinct from a diploma, obtained and then renewed on its two-year cycle, kept current and verifiable.
Attestation, certificate and invoice: proof your training is recognized
On successful completion, you receive:
- an official attestation;
- a certificate of completion;
- a detailed invoice;
- online access to your documents for as long as your certification remains valid.
These documents are the proof to present to your professional order to credit your hours, or to your employer to demonstrate your compliance.
